Modern Family’s Halloween episode killed off a “significant character:” Claire and Mitchell’s mother, DeDe Pritchett.
Wednesday night’s show started with the reveal. The writers wanted the shock value because often a death in the family comes without warning. Claire got a call from her step-dad to say that DeDe died “peacefully in her sleep.”
The remainder of the show focused on family members reminiscing about the good and bad times with DeDe. In a future episode, DeDe's husband will bring for each family member an item she wanted them to have of hers. (Entertainment Weekly)
