Confrontation Over Mask Leads To Stabbing, Fatal Police-Involved Shooting

An argument over wearing masks between two customers at a Quality Dairy in Eaton County, Michigan, led to a stabbing and fatal shooting. Police say that a 43-year-old man, identified as Sean Ruis, went shopping without a mask and was confronted by a 77-year-old customer.

Ruis was asked to leave the store and got into an argument with the older gentleman in the parking lot. As the two argued, Ruis pulled out a knife and stabbed the 77-year-old before fleeing in his car.

A deputy from the Eaton County Sheriff's Office located Ruis' vehicle and pulled him over near his home. When the officer approached the car, Ruis got out and charged towards the deputy. Body camera footage released by the Sheriff's Office shows that Ruis was holding two knives in his right hand and a screwdriver in his left and he ignored the officer's commands to drop the weapons. The deputy tried to back up and create space between herself and Ruis but was forced to open fire. Ruis was rushed to the hospital, where he died during surgery.

The 77-year-old stabbing victim was taken to the hospital and remains in serious condition.

The incident occurred one day after Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order requiring everybody to wear face masks while indoors. Failure to wear a mask could result in a misdemeanor charge and a $500 fine. Any business that does follow the mandate could have their license suspended.
