VOLCANO: Kilauea Eruption Destroys More Homes

Lava continues to flow on Hawaii's Big Island today in a dramatic show of nature's force.

The eruption of Kilauea has been shooting lava and ash as high as 200 feet into the air. On the ground, the slow-moving but unstoppable wave of fiery lava has reduced 26 homes to ash and eaten up nearby land. More than 1,700 local residents have evacuated while others say they are waiting for the last minute to seek shelter.

The U.S. Geological Survey says it has measured nearly 500 earthquakes on the Big Island which were triggered by hot magma boiling through Kilauea. Experts have no idea how long this eruption will continue. (Los Angeles Times)
